Frequently asked questions about studying in Italy
Language of teaching, fees, the amount required for the visa, deadlines, working while studying: answers to Tunisian students' questions.
Can I study in English in Italy?
Yes. Many programmes, especially master's degrees, are taught entirely in English; our catalogue shows for each programme whether it is taught in English, in Italian or in both. You then need to prove your level of English, usually B2.
Do I need to speak Italian?
For an Italian-taught programme, yes: a level of at least B2 is required, often with a recognised certificate. For an English-taught programme, Italian is not required for admission, but it helps a great deal in daily life.
How much does a public university cost?
Fees depend on family income (the « ISEE parificato » for international students) and can be reduced or waived entirely. Private universities set their own prices.
How much money do I need for the study visa?
For 2026/2027, the Italian Embassy in Tunis requires at least €10,179.85, i.e. €783.06 a month for 13 months, in a blocked account with a monthly transfer. Your family can provide these funds.
What is the visa deadline?
30 November 2026 for 2026/2027, and 31 October 2027 for 2027/2028. Some universities set an earlier date, and processing can take up to 90 days.
How many programmes can I choose on Universitaly?
One per pre-enrolment. You can apply to several universities on their own portals, but the pre-enrolment that leads to the visa covers a single programme.
Does a validated pre-enrolment guarantee the visa?
No. The embassy decides on the visa, checking your funds, accommodation, insurance and the coherence of your study plan. And the visa does not guarantee enrolment: the university still checks the original documents.
What is CIMEA?
The Italian centre for the recognition of qualifications. For the visa, its statements of comparability and verification accompany the diploma; the declaration of value issued by the embassy remains an alternative.
Can I work while I study?
Yes, up to 20 hours a week and 1,040 hours a year with the study residence permit.
What do I do when I arrive in Italy?
Apply for the residence permit within eight working days using the post office kit, complete your university enrolment before 31 January and request your codice fiscale.
When should I start?
Ideally nine to twelve months before the intake: translations, CIMEA statements and the language certificate take time, and places for international students are limited.
How much does OpenWay Cons charge?
The first consultation is free. Fees depend on the services you choose (guidance, legalisation, visa) and are presented to you at that meeting, before any commitment.
